Senior Consultant - DBA

BACKGROUND

Company is a Wellington-based company specializing in the design, development, and database administration of systems utilizing Oracle database and tools.

Workload is split fairly evenly between software development, maintenance and support and outsourced Database Administration services. In addition, our organization is accredited as an Oracle Certified Solution Partner and is the sole Value Added Distributor for Oracle in New Zealand. In this role, we foster the use of Oracle within the partner community, and provide a prompt, efficient and personal service to partners.

DATABASE ADMINISTRATION UNIT OVERVIEW

The role of the Database Administration unit is to deliver outsourced DBA service to clients. In providing these services, the overriding principles of the team are:

The services delivered by the team are delivered through a combination of:

  • Support services work; providing ongoing database, operating system, network, and application server administration services.
  • Project-based work; providing DBA services in support of application development projects, undertaking various one-off projects and initiatives.
  • System administration; where business systems are monitored and administered on a daily basis.
  • In many instances, the DBA unit will work collaboratively with the Development unit to deliver and/or administer a business system.

POSITION PURPOSE

The Database Administration unit is responsible for developing, implementing, maintaining and administering/operating databases, operating system environments, network environments and application server environments.

The primary purpose of the role is to take a senior role in delivering such services.

The secondary purpose of the role is to contribute to the success of the Database Administration practice by taking a leadership role within the practice; specifically in the areas of:

  • Capability improvement
  • Supervising and mentoring more junior staff
  • Managing smaller projects
  • Ensuring the quality of deliverables produced for clients, and
  • Working to ensure client satisfaction

DBA Services - Design and Implementation:

  1. Liaise with and support application development teams.
  2. Plan for, prepare, install and configure Operating System, DBMS, Application Server and related software products.
  3. Plan, prepare and configure administrative tasks, processes and procedures.
  4. Manage and install software patches.
  5. Manage the implementation of application and/or database changes.
  6. Design and develop data migration and /or other data management solutions.

    Jobholder is successful when:

  • Operating System, DBMS, Application Server and other closely-related infrastructure is designed and implemented effectively.
  • Appropriate jobs and processes to manage, secure and sustain the implemented environment are defined and deployed according to appropriate operational standards as expected by the client.

DBA Services – Administration and Support

  1. Monitor and manage disk space.
  2. Undertake, as required, performance monitoring and tuning for applications and databases.
  3. Administer security definitions.
  4. Administer operating system and network configurations.
  5. Prepare Monthly Reports

  • Regular status and analytical reporting is prepared according to agreed schedules.

DBA Services – On-call and business-hours support

  1. Participate in the 7x24 on-call support roster.
  2. Provide support, advice and guidance to customers during the business day.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Qualifications

Essential: Tertiary degree

Desirable: Oracle Professional certification

Knowledge/Experience

  • Expertise and experience of Oracle Database Administration technologies, tools, and best practices.
  • Expertise with SQL and PL*SQL.
  • Expertise of best practices in the management of data for optimal recoverability and integrity; and in the conversion and migration of data.
  • Knowledge of Oracle Application Server, and related operating system and network technologies.
  • Understanding of a Systems Development Lifecycle, preferably RUP.
  • Experience leading and mentoring others § Experience providing on-call support services.
  • Excellent problem diagnosis and investigation skills.
  • Understanding of the objectives and mechanics of a professional services organization.
  • Solid written and oral communication skills.
